Purpose
As the official publication of the Society for Vascular Nursing, the Journal will publish, after editorial review, selected papers presented at the annual meeting of the Society, as well as original articles from members and nonmembers. All articles published in the Journal of Vascular Nursing (JVN) will be eligible for consideration for the annual JVN Writing Award. The purpose of the Journal of Vascular Nursing is to provide nurses and other health care professionals with information to foster expert clinical practice in vascular nursing.
Editorial policies
Submission of manuscripts. Readers interested in submitting original manuscripts for possible publication should send the manuscript to the Society for Vascular Nursing, 7794 Grow Dr, Pensacola, FL 32514, phone: (888) 536-4786; E-mail: klstephens@puetzamc.com. (Please follow the instructions for manuscript preparation; correct preparation of the manuscript will expedite the review and publication processes.)
Review of manuscripts. Manuscripts are reviewed by the Editorial Board for accuracy, clarity, and significance to the practice of vascular nursing. The review process takes approximately 3 months. Accepted manuscripts are subject to copyediting to conform to the Journal’s standards. Editing changes and recommendations are subject to author approval on galley proofs before publication.
Disclaimer. Statements and opinions expressed in the Journal of Vascular Nursing are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the Editor, the publisher, or the Society for Vascular Nursing; the Editor, the publisher, and the Society disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the Editor, the publisher, nor the Society guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication, and they do not guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service.
Copyright transfer. As a result of the Copyright Act of 1976, which became effective on January 1, 1978, the following statement, signed by one author, must accompany each manuscript submitted: “The undersigned author transfers all copyright ownership of the manuscript [title of manuscript] to the Society for Vascular Nursing in the event the work is published. The undersigned author warrants that the article is original, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been previously published. I sign for and accept responsibility for releasing this material on behalf of any and all coauthors. [Signature]” Manuscripts accepted for publication become the sole property of the Journal and may not be published in whole or in part without written consent of the publisher. Authors will be consulted, when possible, regarding republication of their material.
Editorials
Editorials should be concise and should express the personal opinion of the author. An editorial should contain a minimum of references, if any. Editorial material may include subjects of clinical interest, as well as topics of social significance. Guidelines for manuscript preparation should be observed when writing an editorial.
Letters to the Editors
The Editor invites comment in the form of letters that express differences of opinion or that support the views of previously published articles or editorials in the Journal of Vascular Nursing. Each letter should be concise. The Editorial Board reserves the right to accept, reject, and excerpt letters without changing the views expressed by the writer. No anonymous correspondence will be published.
Book reviews
Book reviews are encouraged. Please send books for review to the Editor; books will be reviewed at the Editor’s discretion.

Manuscript preparation
Cover letter. A cover letter should identify the name, address, daytime telephone number, and fax number of the author(s).
General requirements. Manuscripts may be submitted via E-mail or on disk, preferably in Microsoft Word. An original and three clear photocopies of all typewritten material (including text, references, legends, and tables) and one set of glossy black-and-white 5 × 7 inch prints of photographs or line drawings must be submitted along with the aforementioned copyright transfer and cover letter.
All manuscripts, including text, references, legends, and table, must be typed double-spaced on one side only of 8½ × 11 inch paper with 1½ to 2-inch margins. The pages must be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner beginning with the title page, followed by text, references, legends, and tables. The length of the manuscript, including all supporting material, must not exceed 20 double-spaced typewritten pages. Once a manuscript is accepted, the final version should be submitted on diskette along with four copies of the printout. The author accepts responsibility for the submitted diskette exactly matching the printout of the final version of the manuscript. Guidelines for submission of accepted manuscript on diskette will be sent to the author by the editorial office.

Title page. The following order of items should appear on the title page: title of manuscript; full name of each author along with highest earned academic degree and institutional affiliation; the name and address of the primary (corresponding) author; the name and address of the author who will receive reprint requests; acknowledgment of any grant support or other financial assistance received; and if the paper has been previously presented, the meeting name, date, and place where presented.
Abstract. A one-paragraph abstract (double-spaced) of the manuscript should be included. This will be published with the manuscript.
Text. All text material must be typed double-spaced. Manuscripts are subject to editing to conform to the Journal’s standards. Generic drug names should be used whenever possible. Names of devices or products other than drugs must be accompanied by the name and city/state of the manufacturer. All standard abbreviations should be spelled out when the term is first mentioned, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses; nonstandard abbreviations should be avoided.
References. References should be cited selectively. All references should be verified and cited consecutively in the text as superscript numerals. The reference list must be typed double-spaced on a separate page in numeric order. A reference to an article in press must include the author name(s), title of article, and name of journal. A reference to a book in press must include all information with the exception of the year of publication and page numbers. Reference format should conform to that set forth in “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (http://www.icmje.org). Abbreviations of journal names should conform to those in Index Medicus. If there are 3 or fewer authors or editors, cite all; if there are 4 or more authors or editors, cite the first 3 with “et al.” If the journal is paged sequentially throughout the volume, the issue number should not be cited; if the journal is not paged sequentially throughout the volume, then both the issue number and the volume number should be cited. Note the following examples:
Journal
Radovich PA. Portal vein thrombosis and liver disease. J Vasc Nurs 2000;18:1-5.
Book
Perry AG, Potter PA. Clinical nursing skills and techniques. St Louis (MO): Mosby; 1998.
Chapter in book
Matsumura J. Surgery of the aorta. In: Fahey VA, editor. Vascular nursing. 3rd ed. Philadelphia: WB Saunders; 1999.
Illustrations and legends. Number illustrations consecutively in the order of text mention. On adhesive-backed labels, type the figure number, article title, and name of first author; indicate the top. Do not mount the illustrations on cardboard. Original drawings or graphs should be prepared in black India ink or typographic (press-apply) lettering. Typewritten or freehand lettering is unacceptable. All lettering must be professionally done and should be in proportion to the drawing, graph, or photograph. Do not send original artwork or x-ray films. Glossy print photographs, 5 × 7 inches (maximum), with good black-and-white contrast are preferred. Consistency in size within the article is strongly preferred. Type legends double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper. Illustrations will be returned only if requested by the author.
Electronic illustration submission. Figures may be submitted in electronic format. All images should be at least 5 in wide. Images should be provided in EPS or TIF format on Zip disk, CD, floppy, Jaz, or 3.5 MO. Macintosh or PC is acceptable. Graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator, not presentation software such as PowerPoint, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics, should be used in the creation of the art. Color images need to be CMYK, at least 300 DPI, with a digital color proof, not a color laser print or color photocopy. Note: This proof will be used at press for color reproduction. Gray scale images should be at least 300 DPI with a proof. Combinations of gray scale and line art should be at least 1200 DPI with a proof. Line art (black and white or color) should be at least 1200 DPI with a proof. Please include hardware and software information, in addition to the file names, with the disk.
Tables. Tables should be self-explanatory and not duplicate the text. Number tables consecutively in Roman numerals according to the order of text citation. Provide a brief title for each table.
Permission and consents. Written permission of the copyright holder and author for figures, tables, or quotation (200 words or more) taken from copyrighted material must accompany the submitted manuscript. The credit line should appear in the figure legends, as a footnote to the table, or as a footnote to the text, and should be worded according to the copyright holder’s specifications. Subject or guardian consent must accompany any photograph that shows a recognizable likeness of a subject. The Journal of Vascular Nursing strongly supports human and animal rights. Author(s) must demonstrate appropriate institutional or IRB approval.
