Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do! To truly succeed in your personal and/or professional life you need to become aware of the influences that shape your thinking and your way of being in the world. Conversely, you need to become aware of how your way of thinking and being influences you and others, and how these influences help or hinder you in realizing your dreams and goals. The word “influence” means the power affecting a person, thing, or course of events, especially one that operates without any direct and apparent effort. There is a direct relationship between power and influence. Personal power refers to “our ability to cause results to occur.”1 This requires each of us to develop an awareness of the effect of our actions. It also requires each of us to take personal responsibility for the outcomes of our choices and actions.
I am amazed how time flies. Our Society’s 23rd Annual National Convention was another success and provided a wonderful opportunity to network with peers. The convention highlighted our organization’s commitment to move vascular nursing forward and create opportunities to influence nursing practice. Through the Society for Vascular Nursing (SVN) each of us influences how the future of vascular nursing will evolve. Through the Journal of Vascular Nursing (JVN) you can influence and advance our specialty.
You have the opportunity to be part of this advancement by becoming active within the organization. You have the power and influence within yourself to make a difference by writing for publication. The support systems available to you are our standards of practice, collegial relationships, mentoring, continuing education, specialty certification, and our Journal. For the vascular nurse, SVN and JVN are our support system. We are so fortunate to have the guidance and influence of an extraordinary organization and Journal to define and maintain the highest of standards and affect both nursing and patient care.
I hope each of you will take the responsibility and challenge to become part of the momentum to impact our nursing practice. You have the power within yourselves to make a difference, be the difference, become connected, and serve nursing to the greatest capacity through writing for publication. Share your stories, plans of care, outcome data, and research with us. We can mentor you along the way. I hope to hear from you soon!
